The Perfect Companion for Inner-city Living

The New York Magazine recently published an interesting article about the Top 10 dogs’ ideal for city living. Apart from the number one listing, the mixed breeds, I think they got it right. A mixed breed that has any of the high energy dog breeds such as a Bull mastiff, Irish setter, Dalmation or Border collie would probably not be ideal for city living.

That being said, any well trained, well adjusted dog would probably do well in any environment.

1: MIXED BREED
2: HAVANESE
3: DACHSHUND
4: CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL
5: NORFOLK TERRIER
6: PORTUGUESE WATER DOG
7: FRENCH BULLDOG
8: GREYHOUND
9: LABRADOR RETRIEVER
10: PUGS

  1. How is a Dachshund good for city living ? Their legs are so short that they get insanely dirty when walking on the street and it cannot be healthy for them to be that close to so many germs and other animals feces leftovers etc. NYC streets are repulsive. I agree with the mixed breed thing though they might as well have not even made a list because saying a mixed breed is number one is like saying you can pretty much have any dog at all.

  2. Brooke, I would have to agree, dirty streets are not good for any pet especially the low-to-the-ground Dachshund.

Pets that are ideal for inner city living are generally those that do well in apartments and don’t require too much outdoor exercise. Dachshunds make perfect apartment pets as they have a calm personality, a fearless nature and a low exercise requirement.
